В или Во?

All the prepositions in Russian language have variants. It happens to make pronunciation of some word combinations easier.

Today we will look at preposition в and its variant во.

You need to use во when all these points are true

• next word starts with two consonants
•                 /or a consonant + soft sign ь
• first consonant of the word is в or ф

Let’s look at some examples.

• в + Флорида
• Флорида
• first consonant of the word is ф
• first two letters are consonants фл
• = во Флориде

• в + Австрия
• first two letters aren’t consonants ав
• = в Австрии

• в + Вена
• first consonant of the word is в
• first two letters aren’t consonants ве
• = в Вене

• в + Владивосток
• first consonant of the word is в
• first two letters are consonants вл
• = во Владивостоке

• в + квартира
• first two letters are consonants кв
• first consonant of the word is к
• = в квартире

• в + все
• first two letters are consonants вс
• first consonant of the word is в
• = во всех

• в + Финлядия
• first consonant of the word is ф
• first two letters aren’t consonants фи
• = в Финлядии

• в + Франция
• first two letters are consonants фр
• first consonant of the word is ф
• =во Франции

• в + Африка
• first two letters aren’t consonants аф
• = в Африке

• в + Вьетнам
• first consonant of the word is в
• second letter is soft sign ь
• = во Вьетнаме

That’s not all the cases. You also need to use вo before these words:

• что: Во что превратился наш парк? What did our park transform into?
• мне: во мне
• многий и его варианты: во множестве случаев, во многих случаях; во множественном числе;
• лев (lion) в льве, во Львове
• лёд (ice) во льду
• лоб (foregead) во лбу
• ложь (lie) во лжи
• рот (mouth) во рту
• сон (dream) во сне (in a dream)

Before prepositive and accusative forms of words:

• двор — yard (во дворе, во двор)
• дворец — palace (во дворце, во дворец)
• тьма — darkness (во тьме, во тьму)

In meaning ‘ради чего-либо’ for sth/ to sth

• во благо (делать что-либо) for the benefit of/pro bono
• во зло (употребить что-либо) to evil
• во избежание (чего) to aviod sth
• во имя (кого, чего) in the name of
• во славу (кого-либо) for glory
• во спасение (ложь во спасение) for salvation

Remember these phrases:

• сойтись во мнении have run, agree on sth
• разойтись во мнениях о чём-л. - to disagree; to split over sth; divide on the point
• во сколько (раз),
• во столько (раз),
• во сто крат hundredfold/a hundred times
• во цвете лет — in the flower of one’s age
• братья (сестры) во Христе, in Christ
